VDS vs VPS — which do you need?

Both are virtualised. The difference is how the CPU is shared — and it matters enormously for consistent performance.

Cloud VPS
Shared CPU cores
Multiple customers share the same physical CPU cores. Most of the time this is fine — but when neighbours spike, your performance can dip.
Lower cost per core
Ideal for websites, dev, staging, small apps
Performance can vary under heavy neighbour load

Cloud VDS — this page
Dedicated physical cores
AMD EPYC physical cores are assigned exclusively to you. No other customer's workload runs on your cores — ever. Performance is guaranteed and consistent.
Higher cost — justified by guaranteed performance
Ideal for production databases, APIs, fintech, SaaS
Zero CPU contention — always your full allocation

What runs best on VDS

Cloud VDS shines when workloads can't tolerate performance variance. Here's what our customers run.

🗄️
Production databases
PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB — high-write workloads need guaranteed CPU cycles. Shared VPS cores under contention cause query timeouts. Dedicated cores eliminate this entirely.
Best on VDS M or L
📡
High-traffic APIs
REST APIs serving thousands of concurrent requests need predictable response times. CPU steal on shared VPS is the silent killer of API SLAs. VDS removes it.
Best on VDS M
💳
Fintech & payment processing
Transaction processing, fraud detection, and real-time settlement require sub-100ms response consistency. Dedicated cores are the correct infrastructure choice here.
Best on VDS M or L
🤖
ML inference & AI workloads
Running inference on CPU-based models (LLMs, embeddings, classification) is highly sensitive to core contention. Dedicated EPYC cores deliver predictable throughput.
Best on VDS L or XL
🔴
Real-time applications
Live chat, collaborative editing, multiplayer, and streaming all require sustained low-latency compute. Shared CPU steal introduces jitter that dedicated cores eliminate.
Best on VDS S or M
🏗️
SaaS backend infrastructure
When your business depends on uptime and consistent performance for paying customers, the step from shared VPS to dedicated cores is the right architectural decision.
Best on VDS M, L or XL

FAQ

What exactly is a "dedicated physical core"?
A physical core is one of the actual processing units on the AMD EPYC 7282 CPU chip. When we say "dedicated", we mean those cores are mapped exclusively to your VDS — no other customer's processes run on them. On a standard VPS, multiple customers share the same physical cores and compete for compute cycles, causing "CPU steal". With VDS, there is zero CPU steal.
Is Cloud VDS managed or unmanaged?
Unmanaged — you have full root access and are responsible for your OS, software, and security. If you need managed infrastructure, contact us to discuss a managed retainer, or consider our Dedicated Server range which can be supplemented with management services.
Why is VDS more expensive than VPS with similar specs?
Because physical cores can only serve one customer at a time. On shared VPS, the same physical core serves many customers, which is how the provider keeps costs low. Dedicating those cores to a single customer means fewer customers per server — that cost is reflected in the price. For workloads that need guaranteed performance, the premium is worth it.
Can I upgrade from VDS S to VDS M without reinstalling?
Yes — upgrades are done from your client area. Your data, OS, and configuration stay in place. The server is resized and you're billed pro-rata for the remainder of the billing period at the higher rate. Downtime during a resize is typically under 60 seconds.
When should I choose Dedicated over VDS?
VDS is still virtualised — there's a hypervisor layer. Dedicated servers are bare metal: no hypervisor, no virtualisation overhead, raw hardware performance. Choose Dedicated when you need more than 8 cores, require specific hardware configurations (RAID, multiple drives), need full hardware control for compliance reasons, or when the last 5–10% of raw performance matters. See our Dedicated Server page.
What operating systems are available?
Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, CentOS, Fedora, and Windows Server from the control panel. Custom ISOs are supported. Cloud-init is available for automated first-boot provisioning.
